Max Lemoine Whitten 1917- July 20, 2015 True American Hero

Max Lemoine Whitten 1917 – 2015 South Jordan, UT. Beloved husband, father, grandfather, great grandfather, and great-great grandfather, passed away peacefully at the age of 97 on Monday, July 20, 2015 surrounded by family. Max was born on August 19, 1917 in Heglier Dundee County, Nebraska to Riley Whitten and Hazel Frazee. Max married his sweetheart Ruth Carrie Haney on October 31, 1942 and was later sealed for time and alleternity in the Los Angeles Temple.
Max was preceded in death by his parents, Riley Whitten and Hazel Frazee Whitten, his three brothers Robert, Frank and John, his grandson Edward Saunders and his beloved wife Ruth Carrie Whitten. He is survived by two daughters, Sandra Lee Whitten Saunders (Larry) and Maxine Whitten, five grandchildren, Denise Jacobs (Sterling), Terri Gabbitas (Gary), (Tami Saunders), Mindy Pehrson (James), Lemoine Saunders (Michelle), and Denny Saunders (Kim). Twenty-three great grandchildren and five great-great granddaughters.
Max was a true American hero and patriot. He joined the army at the age of 24, where he eventually served as a sniper in the 104th Infantry Division during World War II. He shipped to France in the fall of 1944 and spent 195 consecutive days in front line combat. In addition to taking part in five major offensives, he helped liberate thousands of inmates at Mittelbaup-Dora Concentration Camp at Nordhausen, Germany. Max was proud of his service and loved to share his stories with family, friends and anyone that would listen.
Max was a tremendous man who loved more than anything to spend time with family. He had a great sense of humor and could always bring a smile to your face no matter his circumstances. He loved life to the fullest and will be greatly missed by all who knew him.
A funeral service will be held Friday, July 31 at 11:00 am at the River 7th Ward 11473 So. Chapel View Dr., South Jordan, where friends may call one hour prior. A viewing will be held Thursday, July 30, from 6-8 pm at Broomhead Funeral Home, 12600 So. 2200 W. Riverton.
